The Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft was the cherry on top of touring car racing throughout the eighties and nineties, most notably the German “Big Three” era. One of the more outstanding cars was the Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II. Unveiled at the 1990 Geneva Motor Show. Although the 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II was designed and developed from the Mercedes-Benz 190E production car, the DTM-specification aerodynamic package gives a different look that reminds very little of the Mercedes saloon. More so, the chassis, suspension, and engine are all redesigned to the standard of a DTM Champion car. The road version outputs a humble 235bhp, while the unrestricted racing version featured a 373bhp race-tuned engine that could scream up to 10,000rpm. It was the symphony of that short stroke four-cylinder engine that became the anthem of the 1992 DTM season, as Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II won the championship during its three years competing in the series from 1990 to 1992.
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of this legendary vehicle, here at MINI GT we are unveiling a new collection of 1:64 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II models, with plans of offering both road and race versions. While the Black Pearl Metallic is the only official color for the 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II, there were two test cars for the road version in silver that were never released. These two versions will mark the first entries in our new collection. Since the road and racing versions of these cars were built for different purposes, we have taken the extra steps to highlight the differences between the two versions. On each model, the front splitter, side mirror, wheels and roll cage will be adjusted appropriately to match the configuration of the real car. These changes may seem small, but as collectors ourselves we think it’s important to celebrate every detail in each model we create.
